Garden Bird Survey

The annual nationwide Garden Bird Survey starts on Saturday 27th June and goes through to Sunday 5 July. Count the largest number of each species you detect at once in your garden during ONE HOUR of observation, any hour you like, during that period. Fill in the form in the last Southern Bird envelope or download one from the website below. Please record and count all species you detect, not just those listed on the form.

Haast Pass Predator June

p1010014 John Turnbull arriving out at Davis flat after completing the trapping down the Bridle track on a cold and frosty morning in June.

Only 2 stoats were caught and very little bird movement and noise was heard.

p1010012We have started to use a Mohua recording on an ipod with a speaker to play at certain traps along the track. This proved very successful the last time the traps were checked but due to the cold, all the birds were either staying warm or gone to warmer places. We are going to continue on with this method of recording to build up a clearer picture of the Mohua Location and numbers on the trap lines.

In July we are starting on a new trap line which DOC have just put in. There 34 of the new DOC 200 traps along the brand new link track between the Blue Pools and the mouth of the Young River. This will involve an extra person joining us when we check the traps to make the job quicker.

Any volunteers out there just drop us an email info@uppercluthaforestandbird.org.nz

Winter Kea survey, your help needed

juvenile_and_adult_kea

The Kea Conservation Trust are now urgently calling for volunteers to help out with the 2009 Winter Counts. Last year was the first year of this survey and 75 individuals/groups registered as kea counters. We would love to see this number doubled for this years count but as yet we only have 21 people who have put their names forward (refer our website for volunteer names). The more people we can get out into the hills next month (weekends) the more useful the data for future years. Remember, you dont need to be a scientist or super fit; if you can count, are keen and are looking to go skiing, tramping, hunting or just travelling by car through the South Island high country this July, please contact us to register!
