Big Hut Rock & Pillar Range Field Trip

Central Otago-Lakes Branch – Field Trip

23-24th March

 

Explore low-alpine tussock; sub-alpine shrubs & snow tussock; and at higher levels seepage herb fields, low herbs and cushion plants – of the Rock & Pillar Conservation area. Wide variety of sub-alpine flora and invertebrates. Stay overnight in the historic 16 bunk high altitude “Big Hut.”

Sunday 16th September: Project Gold Trip to Mou Waho
Afternoon Tea & Guided Walk
Bring your Lunch & Shovel
There is limited Space so get in quickly and reserve your space

(Weather permitting, will be decided the day before. If not possible the trip will be postponed to the next weekend Saturday 22nd September)

·          9.30am: Meet at the marina andboat to Mou Waho (Chris Boat max 14 persons & DOC boat max 4 persons +plants & gear)

·        10.30am: Planting demonstration, H&S, split into groups& scatter around the island for planting

·        1.00pm: Lunch

·        2.00pm: Finish the planting

·        3.00pm: Guided walk up Arthusa pool with Chris to discoverthe flora and fauna of the island

·        4.30pm: Boat back to Wanaka

 

DOC is funding plants, potting mix, fertilizer pellets, crystal water, stack and the Afternoon tea

Chris is generously offering his help for the talk, the transport to the island, planting and guided walk

DOC will provide Staff & boat for the day, organise the trip and buy the planting gear and food.

Working together for Kea

The Kea Conservation Trust’s annual Winter Advocacy Tour will run for 10 days from Tuesday 26 June – Friday 6 July. Tamsin Orr-Walker and Dr Lorne Roberts (Unitec, NZ), will be delivering the talk which will be held in 

Wanaka at the St John’s Room,

Link Way

on Monday 2nd July at 7.30pm, 

in partnership with the Central Otago Lake Branch of Forest & Bird and the Department of Conservation.

Kea

This year’s talk, entitled Working together for Kea,

will focus on how communities working together, can achieve positive conservation results. As part of the advocacy tour we will also show those people keen to drive local kea advocacy initiatives how they can get started. We will also be visiting as many schools as possible and showcasing snippets of our new kid’s kea conservation DVD.

Field trip to the upper Manuherikia valley, via the Omarama saddles, on 5th November.

The Central Otago-Lakes branch of the Forest & Bird Society are running a 4WD field trip on Saturday 5th November.

This trip will visit the tussock grasslands of the upper Manuherikia valley via a loop through the two Omarama saddles.

This will be a one day trip, meeting at Tarras at 8.30 am.

You can bring your own 4WD vehicle or seats will be available in other people’s vehicles.

This is a wonderful remote tussock grassland area, part of the newly created Oteake Conservation Park.
